no time to hibernate

The weather out side is frightful, there is a little exercise removing snow and a 2 1/2 mile walk indoors and walking on my job and over 11,000 steps before the day is through. Yesterday I had a thirty minute + workout with dumbbells and resistant bands and a total gym routine. I threw in some push ups and crunches and I had a total body workout. Winter we don't have to hibernate.

My sleep at night has really improved over the last six months. I am experiencing more hours of continuous sleep. The overall effects of walking and strength training has renewed my hope for over all health.

My grandson is cute as a button. My older grandsons have made me very proud in some of their decisions they have made spiritually and goals for their lives. My own goals in the coming years are moved by their examples.

Keep walking

Learning from past therapy - therapy not wasted

If you and I live long enough often the same health problems occur. Nagging injuries or chronic health conditions return despite our best efforts. With me, I have CP and with it I have aches and pains that I have had before. I have gone to physical therapy and I have learned how they treated it and I have learned to apply the techniques and treatments they taught me. I have found it reduces the amount of time I recover and return to normal routines of life. Getting follow ups helps spot changes but it helps to use what I have learned.
This winter has been cold.
I have increased my strength training with walking this winter.
At night I have enjoyed relaxing music and reading to relax to sleep. My sleep has been better. When you have battled insomnia sleeping 7 - 8 hours is wonderful.
In one of my reads I have been reading the Narnia and space trilogies of CS Lewis. Reading his work is very conversational. He stimulates my mind and spirit. I also have read the Pacific and Band of Brothers. For me it puts me in touch with my father who served in WW2.
A TV series I have enjoyed the least two years in "Men of a Certain Age". Their banter put me in touch with my own experiences. The characters are flawed but that is the charm of the show. "Blue bloods" with the Regan family discussing and debating the issues they encounter is good stuff.
What does all this have to do with walking? I am not sure myself but having interests helps health and keeps us walking. Walking helps the body, soul and mind and life should too.
In today's devotion from the daily Bread we find God works at midnight. Aren't you glad He never sleeps or slumbers. Keep walking!

weekend walks - week end walks stupid violence

Over last weekend we had two beautiful walks one indoors and one out. We used Leslie Sansone's 5 mile fast walk and walked 3 Miles on Saturday and Sunday we took a three mile walk outdoors on a sunny but cold day. The air was wonderful and little wind at the time of the walk. We were well bundled up and good shoes for traction. The two walks helped us achieve our ten thousand steps for the day and were aerobic. Winter can be a fun time to walk and with an indoor walk all the muscles of our bodies are used.
Sad was the day when those people were shot in Arizona. I did not no much of the congresswoman at the time but what a delight to learn of this wonderful person. Politically I may differ on a point or two but from what I gathered what an interesting and caring person. It is too bad tragedy has to take place to look and people a little closer to learn good qualities of someone due to distance and number of those who serve are decent people. Both parties and ideologies need more like her.

It has been amazing to watch her recovery. She is a gem.
Walking we notice the events of our lives and take note. keep walking

New year, New Opportunity - resolutions

Most of us make resolutions and most of them we fall short or give up. I have learned resolutions are soon forgotten. I would rather look back at the last year and learn from the year's experiences and move in this year with a desire to renew my commitments to life and health.
Last year I went through health problems and injuries that slowed my fitness and health goals. There were definite set backs in that I could not walk for a while and even put on weight. I rebounded with physical therapy and medical help and got back on the saddle in both walking and eating habits. I look at that as a victory.
One thing that helped me was I continued my studies in the Life of Christ from a walker's point off view. I continued my over all health studies. I learned that we can go through health problems and heal and return to routines of walking and eating moderately and healthy. I believe if I am granted more years I will face health setbacks. What I learned last year was not everything goes right and we still can recover.
Last year I put into my routines core exercises, push ups and squats and light weights or dumbbells and increased my strength training. In my rehab I did work at stretching and helped deal with pain. So moving forward this year walking, stretching and weight training will be part of my program 5 to 6 days a week. Some weeks 7 I am sure.
I know we just began 2011 and I can report 2 days workouts indoors weights, core and walking. 363 days to go. My experiences tell me I will have difficulties but I am convinced I can bounce back. I don't think I can experience the losses of Job or severe loss of health due to injury or disease. I believe I have my limits and can fail but of the aches and pains I ave had I can recover.
Look back, learn, and move ahead. I definitely believe in asking God for help and strength and with each new day we can choose a walk, a healthy meal, time spent with a friend, and time spent with God. We can choose life, keep walking.
